Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has announced that the final decision on the host nation or nations for the Asia Cup will be made during the IPL final. Representatives from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will be present during the discussions.
At present, Pakistan is designated as the host for the Asia Cup this year. However, the BCCI has expressed its reluctance to send the Indian team to Pakistan. In response, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Najam Sethi, proposed a "Hybrid Model" for the tournament. Under this model, four matches would be played in Pakistan, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Afghanistan would compete in those matches. The BCCI and ACC sources have considered this proposal as a viable solution, with India playing all their matches at neutral venues.
The PCB has expressed its desire for the second phase of the Asia Cup to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, objections have been raised by Bangladesh and Sri Lanka due to the extreme heat in the UAE during September.
ACC head Jay Shah is expected to convene an executive body meeting to make a formal announcement regarding the Asia Cup host. The PCB is open to playing India at a neutral venue, preferably in Dubai, as it would generate higher gate receipts. However, they are also willing to consider other countries, such as Sri Lanka, if the ACC can match the gate receipts amount that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) received in 2022 from the India-Pakistan matches held in Dubai.
The Asia Cup is scheduled to take place between September 1-17 this year.
