Tayyip Erdogan has claimed victory in Turkey's presidential election, securing his position as the country's leader for another five years.

In a speech to his supporters, Erdogan claimed that the voters had entrusted him with the responsibility to govern Turkey. While the final official results are yet to be released, Erdogan's declaration came as both state-run Anadolu agency and the opposition ANKA news agency reported that he had a clear advantage with almost 99% of the ballot boxes counted.

The opposition, led by Kemal Kilicdaroglu, had hoped to unseat Erdogan, who faced a decline in popularity due to economic challenges faced by the country. However, Erdogan's victory will likely solidify his authoritarian rule and further consolidate his power. Throughout his tenure, Erdogan has already made significant changes to domestic, economic, security, and foreign policies, positioning Turkey as a regional power.

Erdogan expressed his gratitude to the Turkish people and emphasized that all citizens were winners in the election. His victory in both the presidential runoff and the parliamentary elections held on May 14, where his electoral alliance secured a majority, further strengthens his position.

The defeat of Kilicdaroglu, who aimed to lead the country towards a more democratic and collaborative path, is likely to be viewed differently in various parts of the world. Moscow may welcome Erdogan's victory, as Turkey has taken a more independent and confrontational approach to foreign affairs, while Western capitals and much of the Middle East may mourn the loss of a potential shift towards a different direction.
